The Relationship between Family Function and Health Promoting Behaviors of Middle School Students

Abstract
This descriptive study was conducted to identify the correlation between family function and health promoting behaviors of middle school students. The subjects of this study were 431 middle school students who live in Gwangju, Korea. The data were collected by selfreporting questionnaires from 6th to 17th of May, 2003. The results of the study were as follows: The mean score in family function of middle school students was 59.2 (total 100) and the mean score of health promoting behaviors was 125.0 (total 188). Health promoting behaviors showed significant positive correlations with family function of middle school students (r=0.41, p=0.001). In conclusion, family function was the major influencing factor on the health promoting behaviors of middle school students. These results showed that nursing interventions and health education program for promoting family function of middle school students and their parents should be developed.
